Apatosaurus - the largest long-necked dinosaur

Its name came from the Ancient Greek words "apate" meaning "deceptive" and "sauro" meaning "lizard" owing to erstwhile confusion in science when it was first discovered: its bones resembled those of some large aquatic reptiles and were dissimilar from those of other long-necked dinosaurs.

was a herbivorous dinosaur that lived in the Late Jurassic Period, between 155 and 150 million years ago. It is believed to be one of the largest land animals to have ever roamed the Earth. It was 22 m long, and weighed about 20 tons. The massive prehistoric animal could only move slowly on its sturdy legs - its hind libs were longer than its forelimbs, with a single claw on each forelimb and three claws on each hind limb. Its tail was long and unusually thin, resembling a whip.

Apatosaurus had a skull that was rather small for its body size. It contained chisel-like teeth, suited to a plant-eating diet. Fossil remains of Apatosaurus have been found in North America.
